Thanks to Anchorage’s Tricia Stonebraker, the Loyola University Chicago women’s soccer team has accomplished something it hadn’t done in four years.
Stonebraker scored in the 68th minute to provide a 1-0 win over Indiana State in recent Horizon League action to extend Loyola’s unbeaten streak to six games, the longest since 2008.
Unlike that year, however, this year’s group has won four times on the road. Twice, Stonebraker has scored the winning goal.
Against Indiana State she received a cross in the middle and powered a shot to the near post. It capped a nice run up the field by the Ramblers.
“It basically just came from hard work and everybody fighting for every ball because I would describe the goal more as scrappy rather than pretty,” she told me. “But a goal is a goal.”
Stonebraker, of Service High fame, leads the team with 7 points [2 goals, 1 assist] in 11 games.
Loyola is 5-0-1 since Sept. 2
“Whatever we’re doing is working,” she said with a laugh.
