He is a professional triathlete by trade, but Damian Hill of Bristol Bay tackled a strictly biking event at the Deschutes River Valley Time Trial Festival in Oregon.
He only wanted to work his skills – he came away with much more, winning the 3-stage, 81-mile race up and down the Cascade Mountains.
“It was a good training weekend,” Hill told me. “I went as hard as I could on the first day and completely blew up on the second day.”
The former commercial fisherman from Naknek finished with a total time of 3 hours, 37 minutes, 35 seconds, just 5 seconds ahead of Athletes Lounge teammate Chris Bagg.
The 29-year-old Alaskan appeared to have victory in the bag after dominating performances in the first two stages, a 26-mile road race and 8-mile hill climb.
Bagg had other ideas, however, and nearly pulled off an improbably comeback, trimming the lead from 186 seconds all the way down to five.
“I didn’t leave any seconds out there,” Hill said.
