Griffin starts WNBA preseason opener [Basketball]

Eagle River’s Kelsey Griffin started at forward and played 20 minutes as the Connecticut Sun beat the New York Liberty 96-81 in tonight’s WNBA preseason opener.

The 6-foot-2 second-year player collected 9 points, 3 steals and 2 rebounds.

Griffin, of Chugiak High fame, started in place of injured starter Tina Charles.

Griffin is coming off a strong season in Israel, where she averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds in 18 games for Maccabi Ramat Hen.

Daniels shoots 83 on first day of NCAAs [Golf]

Anchorage’s Kevin Daniels of American International College is tied for 64th out of 110 golfers after the first day of the NCAA Super Regional in Pennsylvania.

The senior fired an 83 this afternoon on the Par 71 6,984-yard East Course at Hershey Country Club. He is 11 shots off the lead.

Daniels, of South High fame, struggled immediately after carding five consecutive bogies before earning a par on No. 6. He finished with a 45 on the front 9.

The back 9 was much better as he scored par on seven holes.

The second round is Tuesday.
