The Municipality of Anchorage, Mayor's Office and Parks & Recreation Department are working in partnership with the Anchorage School District, the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame and Healthy Futures to promote healthy lifestyles among our teenagers. We believe sports and physical activity are critical to the emotional as well as physical health of Alaska's young people. With obesity the number one health issue now in America, it is important for us to take a proactive stance.
We are in the process of compiling a literary collection of motivational essays written by Alaska's Healthy Heroes. Our young people look up to Alaskan athletes and will listen to their stories. These literary responses will be used within community events to help educate the public.
Many of these literary responses will find their way into a publication called Alaska's Healthy Heroes: Letters to the Community. Many will be posted at the Municipality of Anchorage's web site (www.muni.org) and the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame website (www.alaskasportshall.org) and some will be preserved at a hall of fame facility once it is developed to help inspire future generations of Alaskans. We love the idea of hearing from our local Healthy Heroes and are excited about the open-ended possibilities with these responses.
If you are interested in contributing to this community effort and motivating our young people into making healthy lifestyle choices, please contact the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame .
